South Dakota’s first free all-ages esports event is returning for another year.
SDN Communications and its 17 member-owner companies will host the second edition of the SoDak Circuit on Oct. 11 at the Sioux Falls Convention Center after the inaugural event in Sept. 2024 drew in more than 750 competitors and guests.
Registration details, playable game titles and new features of the tournament will be released later. Be the first to receive news about the SoDak Circuit by signing up for the newsletter at SoDakCircuit.com.
The SoDak Circuit will award cash prizes and trophies for top finishers in all titles as well as door prizes. In 2024, gamers played “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate,” “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe,” “Fortnite” and “Rocket League,” among others.
There will be seating available for people to watch the matches, which will be shown on large screens. SoDak Circuit will have tournament-style brackets for different age groups. Attendees can also try out different games at several free-play stations.
Esports participation continues to grow in South Dakota and the region. The 2024-25 school year marks the first year of esports being a sanctioned sport in the state. The state tournament will be held Feb. 14-15 in Aberdeen.
For SDN’s member companies, hosting an esports event is the perfect way to highlight the power of their combined 50,000+ miles of high-speed fiber-optic connectivity across the region, covering more than 80 percent of the state’s geography. It also serves as a workforce recruitment tool to get kids and adults interested in technical careers within the telecommunications industry.
