The annual SculptureWalk in downtown Sioux Falls is now the largest public sculpture exhibit in the world. This year-round display adds color, texture and creativity for everyone to enjoy. This year’s 2025 exhibit features over 80 sculptures installed throughout downtown and into the Cathedral Historic District.
The SculptureWalk is designed to be free, accessible and part of everyday life. Local businesses sponsor individual pieces, contributing to the city’s creative identity. SDN Communications is among the list of sponsors, backing sculpture #46, “Two Bucks” by Steve Bormes. The piece is on display on the corner of Phillips Avenue and 8th Street.
As a longtime sponsor, SDN Communications has proudly supported SculptureWalk Sioux Falls as part of our ongoing commitment to strengthening the community we serve. We know connection extends beyond technology and that it is important to connect people through shared experiences, creativity and culture. Public art initiatives like SculptureWalk help make Sioux Falls a more vibrant place to work, live and visit.
Bormes, the creative mind behind “Two Bucks,” perfectly captures the spirit of SculptureWalk and has been a participating artist for years. His artistic approach to sculpting is molded by his playful, imaginative and curious mindset. As a self-taught artist, he began sculpting about 25 years ago but shifted from owning a local gallery with his wife, called Rug & Relic, to his full-time job around 5 years ago. Today, he transforms discarded materials such as Volkswagen parts, tractor hoods and equestrian leather into his own personal prairie funk style.
For Bormes, public art is about connection. He loves seeing people interact with his sculptures, whether it’s a child giggling, a couple stopping for a photo or someone suddenly recognizing a familiar piece of machinery hidden in plain sight. “Kids are my best critics,” he says, valuing their openness and honesty. That sense of accessibility and playfulness is at the heart of his art and helps make the mission of the Sioux Falls SculptureWalk inclusive and engaging for all viewers.
Walking through downtown, you’ll see sculptures that range from playful to abstract, realistic to symbolic. Variety is part of the experience, and there’s a beauty in the uniqueness that no two sculptures are alike.
The SculptureWalk display doesn’t stand alone thanks to the permanent installations like the “Arc of Dreams” spanning the Big Sioux River between 6th and 8th Street. This piece is now an anchor of the downtown landscape year-round. It’s a visual reminder of the city’s investment in public art and a great addition framing the scenic riverwalk views.
SculptureWalk isn’t just about observation; it also invites participation. From May to September, viewers could vote for the annual People’s Choice Award, where the top three winning sculptures receive a cash prize. It’s a small but meaningful way for the public to be involved and engaged with SculptureWalk and in supporting local artists. Check out the SculptureWalk Sioux Falls website to find out who the artists behind your favorite sculptures are or to look back on past winning pieces. Additionally, most SculptureWalk sculptures are available to purchase or able to be leased long-term.
There’s a reason that after more than two decades, the appeal of SculptureWalk hasn’t worn off. The exhibit encourages you to slow down, look around and engage in something new.
