Before he became the vice president of sales for SDN Communications, Dennis Cromwell worked extensively in sales and business management. Throughout his career, he has approached his responsibilities with the mind-set of an entrepreneur.
He has successfully started and run small companies. He’s had the mindset of an entrepreneur even when working as an account executive.
Front-line salespeople are a lot like entrepreneurs, he says, because they are largely responsible for their own success.
Cromwell joined SDN in late 2006 and was promoted to vice president of sales in the spring of 2014. He oversees an experienced sales staff of about 20 people, including members of the commercial and wholesale sales teams.
He grew up in O’Neill, Neb., and graduated from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in 1979.
He began his career as a driver for United Parcel Service in Columbus, Neb. About two years later, he and a friend started a business writing medical software in Norfolk.
He joined the staff of AT&T in Omaha in 1985 and transferred to Sioux Falls in 1993. When AT&T created Lucent Technologies in 1996, he moved to Lucent.
Around 2001, as an early adapter to e-commerce, he started an online business, selling telecommunications products. In 2004 he joined the sales staff of Communication Innovators and joined SDN when it acquired Communication Innovators’ South Dakota operations.
His wife, Susie, teaches piano lessons. The couple has two grown daughters and a young granddaughter. He enjoys traveling with his family and has flown as a private pilot since 2002.
