Bill Heaston has worked on the legal front of the changing telecommunications industry for the past 28 years.
He is a military veteran and an attorney who began his telecom career in 1986. For the past six years, he has been the vice president of legal & regulatory for SDN Communications.
“My key responsibility is to provide legal advice to the senior leadership of the company,” he says. “A lot of my work involves contracts, litigation and regulatory issues with the Federal Communications Commission.”
He started working in telecom after 21 years with the Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps, or JAG. He is a Vietnam veteran who also served in Europe as well as the United States, including a stint teaching at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.
The Omaha native earned bachelor and law degrees from Creighton University. He also earned a Master of Laws degree from New York University.
He met his wife, Dorris, while serving in the military. She was with the Red Cross.
He started working in telecommunications in 1986 with U.S. West, initially in Omaha and then in Denver. As a regional attorney for U.S. West, he helped draft legislation that deregulated phone services in South Dakota and North Dakota.
He moved to the Sioux Falls area in 1998 to work for the former Dakota Telecommunications Group and started with SDN in August 2008.
Heaston and his wife live in Harrisburg. They have four grown children and eight grandchildren. He enjoys working in the yard, playing golf and tennis, and snow skiing.
