For a relatively small company, SDN Communications has a big impact on community well-being, especially during the holiday season.

The Sioux Falls-based company’s 160 employees are active in the civic-minded matters year-round, but they make special efforts in December to help people and families in need.

This year, SDN employees identified five charitable organizations in Sioux Falls with immediate needs and are helping the charities address those needs. They encourage others in the community to help, too.

“I think all five of these organizations are very worthy. They depend on donations to keep afloat and keep helping families,” says Abby Vostad, an executive assistant at SDN. She helps coordinate SDN’s charitable activities.

Bags of food, games and clothing ready for distribution tend to pile up behind her desk. Work colleagues also leave envelopes containing cash and gift cards at her work station.

The organizations benefiting from SDN’s help provide services that cover a wide range of human needs,  from sheltering cold and hungry people to protecting and comforting neglected children and adults with developmental challenges.

The organizations in Sioux Falls that SDN employees are helping and encouraging other people to help are:

  • The Banquet, a food ministry that also provides clothing and other items to people in need. Most recently, The Banquet has been collecting new undergarments for families who cannot afford them. There is a big need for items such as socks and onesies for infants, Vostad says. Read more about Project Inside Out or call 605-335-7066 to help.
  • LifeScape, which serves children and adults with disabilities. An immediate need is to help provide Christmas gifts for some residents. Get more information about the organization and its needs or call 800-584-9294.
  • Children’s Home Society of South Dakota, which strives to protect, support and enhance the lives of children and their families. The organization offers services ranging from shelter to education. SDN employees have been helping the acquire board games for gifts and program use. Check out the organization’s Christmas Wish lists or call 605-334-6004.
  • Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Dakota, which provide temporary housing near Sanford and Avera hospitals in Sioux Falls for the family members of sick or injured children receiving medical treatment. SDN employees are helping gather household items and grab-and-go food items for guests. Take a look at the wish list or call 605-336-6398, extension 7, to offer help.
  • Bishop Dudley Hospitality House, which provides emergency shelter for people who are homeless and vulnerable. SDN employees collected items, cash and gift cards to deliver to the facility, which is in the downtown area. For information about the shelter 605-809-8424 or take a look at the items the shelter needs.

Everyone in the community can relate to one of those organizations, Vostad says, and SDN staffers want to make a difference. The company suggests that employees give $15 per week during December to help meet charities meet urgent needs, she says. Employees who do so are allowed to wear jeans to work all month.

“The company takes care of us and gives us opportunities to take care of others,” Vostad says. “Hopefully, we make at least a little impact.”

SDN and its employees typically provide financial and volunteer support to more than a dozen other charitable organizations during the year. The company is committed to the admirable belief that being a great company starts with being a good citizen.

SDN provides broadband connectivity, cybersecurity services and other communications services to businesses and institutions in the region. Read more about the company's civic involvement in the Community section of this blog.
